A Traumatic Brain Injury is a complex injury that results from a violent blow or jolt to the victim’s head or body. Moreover, it can occur by an object, including a shattered piece of skull, penetrating the victim’s brain tissue.
A mild traumatic brain injury might only affect the victim’s brain cells for a short time. (However, that does not mean that a "mild" brain injury is not a serious injury.) On the other hand, a serious traumatic brain injury can result in long-term complications or even death.
Traumatic brain injuries may cause symptoms to appear immediately following the traumatic event, though sometimes symptoms don't appear until days or weeks after the trauma.
By and large, falls account for the largest percentage of traumatic brain injuries. Even so, auto accidents account for a significant percentage of these injuries. Furthermore, sports injuries cause a remarkable number of brain injuries.
Remarkably, traumatic brain injuries disproportionately affect children as well as the elderly. What's more, the CDC states that nearly half of all traumatic brain injury emergency room visits are by children. Moreover, they report that 80% of traumatic brain injuries among the elderly were caused by falls. Unfortunately, another large percentage of traumatic brain injuries also stem from attempted suicides.
