With offices in both Lakeland and Brandon, Dean Burnetti Law opened its doors in February 2015, with one goal in mind: Serving God as well as its clients. Mr. Burnetti, a former minister, wanted a different kind of law firm – one where he could practice his Christianity as well as the law in order to truly help people in need. Consequently, soon after the firm doors opened, they sought a ministry which would give back to the community, and by December 2015, they committed to help support Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital’s Bereavement and Ancillary Funds.
Some people ask why we don’t choose to direct our donations toward something “more uplifting” such as medical research for finding a cure to childhood diseases, but we had something else in mind: Luckily, many people have never experienced having a chronically ill child who has been hospitalized for any length of time. But for those who have, they feel the emotion and helplessness that many will never know: Every part of your life is affected when your child is sick.
When parents are forced to rush to the hospital with their child, they may literally have to leave at a moment’s notice (sometimes even leaving water running, a television playing, or food on the stove).
If the child is hospitalized for any length of time, besides the obvious medical bills and insurance co-payments incurred, the parents may miss work, they may have to pay for someone to stay with their other children, groceries in their refrigerator may go bad, they may incur the extra expense of gas to travel to and from the hospital, they may incur additional food or laundry expenses while they stay camped out at the hospital with their child, they may have to pick up expensive prescriptions or special dietary needs when the child is released, and they may have any host of other expenses that they may not be able to cover on their own while their child is healing. That’s why we were thrilled to learn that Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital has an Ancillary Fund to assist children’s families in their time of need.
As for our participation in donating to the hospital’s Bereavement Fund, we feel that the only thing harder than watching helplessly while one’s child fights a savage disease is the void left when that child loses their battle. Often when this happens, all the family’s resources have been tapped, and they are forced to cut corners or make final decisions that they might make differently if they had an immediate boost in income. It is our desire to assist these families who must face the difficult and expensive task of burying their child who didn’t make it.
